Paediatric Urinary Tract Infections
UrologyPaediatrics
Paediatric Urinary Tract Infections are common causes of fever in infants and children. They can be subdivided into infections of the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Urinary tract infections in infants and young children often recur, and if there are congenital urinary tract abnormalities, treatment can become more complex and challenging. Therefore, in diagnosing and treating paediatric urinary tract infections, in addition to therapy during the acute phase, it is more important to examine whether there are congenital abnormalities in the urinary tract structure. Suppose abnormalities such as vesicoureteral reflux are found. In that case, there may be a need for surgical treatment to prevent some children from developing kidney failure in the future or even requiring long-term dialysis and other unfortunate sequelae.
Symptoms
The symptoms of paediatric urinary tract infections may vary depending on the site of the infection and the child's age and may include:
- Fever and chills
- Urgency or frequency of urination
- Painful urination or a burning sensation during urination
- Abdominal pain, back pain, or flank pain (especially in kidney infections)
- Discoloration or unusual odour of urine
- Blood in the urine, visible in diapers
- The symptoms may be more vague for infants and young children, such as poor feeding, irritability, vomiting, or delayed growth.
