Hip Surgery

Orthopaedics

Hip surgery refers to a range of orthopaedic procedures aimed at repairing, reconstructing, or replacing damaged hip joints. It is commonly performed for conditions such as joint degeneration, fractures, congenital abnormalities, mobility issues, or chronic pain.

Common Hip Surgeries

 Total Hip Replacement (THR)HemiarthroplastyHip ArthroscopyFixation
DescriptionReplaces both femoral head and acetabulum with prosthesisReplaces only the femoral headMinimally invasive repair using arthroscopeUses metal plates, screws, or nails to fix fractures
Common IndicationsSevere osteoarthritis, avascular necrosis Elderly patients with femoral neck fracturesFAI (femoroacetabular impingement), labral tearFemoral neck or intertrochanteric fractures
AdvantagesSignificant pain relief, improved function, long-lastingSimpler surgery, lower surgical risk for elderly patientsMinimally invasive, fast recovery, joint preservationPreserves natural bone structure, allows early mobilization
Limitations / RisksMajor surgery, longer recovery, risk of dislocationMay require future conversion to total replacementBest for early-stage disease; less effective in arthritisRisk of poor healing in osteoporotic bone, may need revision

Indications

  • Severe hip osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
  • Avascular necrosis of the femoral head
  • Hip fractures (especially in the elderly)
  • Hip dislocation or instability
  • Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
  • Labral tears
  • Chronic hip pain not responding to conservative treatment

Procedure Overview

Preoperative Assessment

  • Detailed medical history and physical examination
  • Imaging (X-ray, MRI, or CT)
  • Blood tests and anaesthetic evaluation
  • Patient education on rehabilitation

On the Day of Surgery

  • Performed under general or spinal anaesthesia
  • Procedure typically lasts 1.5 to 3 hours
  • Depending on type, joint is repaired or replaced

Postoperative Recovery

  • Begin physiotherapy within 1–2 days after surgery
  • Use of walking aids like crutches or a walker
  • Hospital stay ranges from 5 to 10 days
  • Full recovery typically takes 6 weeks to 3 months

Benefits of Hip Surgery

  • Significant reduction in chronic hip pain
  • Improved mobility and joint function
  • Better balance and walking ability
  • High success and satisfaction rates
  • Modern implants last 15–20 years on average

Risks and Complications

  • Postoperative infection (rare with antibiotics)
  • Blood clots (e.g. deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism)
  • Joint dislocation
  • Wear or loosening of the prosthesis
  • Nerve or blood vessel injury
  • Leg length discrepancy
  • Need for long-term follow-up of prosthetic integrity

FAQ

Patients with long-standing hip pain and mobility issues that affect daily life and fail to improve with non-surgical treatment may be candidates.
Most patients can stand and walk with assistance within a few days. With physiotherapy, walking ability improves over several weeks.
Yes, but modern prostheses are highly durable and typically last 15–20 years depending on activity level and other factors.
Younger or more active patients may eventually need a revision surgery, depending on the wear of the implant.
Yes—low-impact activities like walking, swimming, and cycling are recommended. High-impact sports should be avoided to preserve the prosthesis.
