Functional Dyspepsia TCM Treatment

Do you have frequent stomach pain, bloating and flatus, have done gastroscopy but can't find the reason?  You may have functional dyspepsia.

According to local university research, about 11% of the population in Hong Kong suffers from functional dyspepsia. Symptoms include a feeling of fullness, postprandial fullness, abdominal pain or burning sensation in the upper abdomen. Studies have found that proton inhibitors, the first-line treatment of Western medicine, are only effective in 30% of patients with functional dyspepsia (Cheong et al., 2018).

Needless to say, the combination of Chinese and Western medicine can achieve more significant therapeutic effects than Western medicine alone (Ko et. al., 2021). Studies have also pointed out that acupuncture can help regulate the functions of gastrointestinal motility, nervous system, and endocrine system, thereby treating functional dyspepsia (Guo, Wei & Chen, 2020).

HEAL Medical now offers functional dyspepsia TCM treatment service to resolve your stomach discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

Functional dyspepsia refers to a condition in which the stomach remains unwell even after excluding other stomach disorders, such as gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection and stomach cancer. Common symptoms include a feeling of fullness, postprandial satiety, pain in the upper and middle abdomen, or a burning sensation in the upper and middle abdomen. The cause of functional dyspepsia has yet to be identified by the medical profession, and the prevailing view is that it is related to poor dietary habits, stress, emotions, and sleep disorders.
Functional dyspepsia belongs to the categories of "gastric distress" and "gastric pain" in Chinese medicine, which is considered to be caused by weakness of the spleen and stomach, coupled with Qi stagnation, food accumulation, phlegm-dampness, blood stasis, and other pathogens. Common types of functional dyspepsia appear in the form of spleen deficiency and Qi stagnation, spleen deficiency and phlegm obstruction, liver and stomach disharmony, spleen and stomach damp-heat, dietary stagnation, spleen and stomach deficiency and cold, and mixing of cold and heat, etc. The specific type of Chinese medicine can be determined by the Chinese medicine practitioner after learning the medical history and conducting examination and diagnosis.
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is a bacterium that lives in the stomach and duodenum. About 1/3 of the population in Hong Kong has been infected with H. pylori. H. pylori can cause gastritis and stomach discomfort. In addition, people infected with H. pylori are twice as likely to develop stomach cancer as those who are not infected, so it is important to screen for H. pylori in the stomach and treat it early. (Cheung & Tang, 2018)
Gastric discomfort is very common in Hong Kong, and many patients continue to feel sick after gastroscopy without any abnormalities, which is often due to functional dyspepsia. According to a study conducted by a local university, about 11% of Hong Kong people suffer from functional dyspepsia.
Patients with gastric pain should avoid cold food and cold drinks, and should eat a warm diet and avoid lying down immediately after eating. In addition, patients should ensure that they consume sufficient dietary fiber, such as fruits and vegetables.
