As men age, the prostate undergoes changes that may lead to specific health issues. These problems typically occur in men over 50 years old. The three most common prostate issues are Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), Prostatitis, and Prostate Cancer.
- Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)
BPH is a natural physiological process of ageing in men and is a common condition in older males. Although it is a benign enlargement, as the glandular tissue grows, it can significantly obstruct the urethra, impeding normal urination.
- Prostatitis
Prostatitis refers to inflammation in the prostate and can be caused by bacterial infection, non-bacterial inflammation, or other reasons. Symptoms may include frequent urination, urgency, painful urination, abdominal discomfort, and more. Most cases of acute prostatitis can be cured, but a small percentage may progress to chronic prostatitis. Chronic prostatitis can have intermittent flare-ups and can be challenging to manage. However, with appropriate treatment, chronic prostatitis can ultimately be cured.
- Prostate Cancer
As of 2020, prostate cancer ranks third among the most common cancers in men. Prostate cancer may not exhibit apparent symptoms in its early stages, but as the tumour enlarges, it can lead to issues such as urinary problems and sexual dysfunction. It may spread to other body parts in advanced settings, causing more severe health impacts.
