Lung Cancer Screening Plan

Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in Hong Kong and is one of the most common cancers, with more than 4,000 new cases every year. In 2021, 4,037 people died of lung cancer in Hong Kong. Lung cancer in the early stage is usually asymptomatic, but as the disease progresses, lung cancer will affect the surrounding tissues and various symptoms will appear, including a persistent cough, blood in sputum, chest discomfort and pain when taking a deep breath, etc. If you are 50 years old or above, smoke habitually, have long-term exposure to second-hand smoke, or have a family history of lung cancer, you have a higher chance of developing lung cancer. For high risk individuals, they are advised to undergo a low dose lung cancer screening each year so lung cancer can be diagnosed earlier. This will improve survival rates and reduce the risk of death from lung cancer.

HEAL Medical is now launching a lung cancer health check plan, including doctor's consultations before and after screening and low-radiation dose CT thorax scans. This test can accurately detect early stage tumors, and can significantly reduce lung cancer mortality by 20%! High-risk individuals should undergo lung cancer screening to diagnose early-stage lung cancer in order to improve their survival rate. Act now to protect you and your family’s health!

Who should receive low radiation dose lung cancer screening?

To reduce the risk of developing lung cancer, low-radiation dose CT thorax scans are recommended for those who are asymptomatic but are at high risk. High-risk individuals include:

  • People aged 50 or above
  • family history of lung cancer
  • Smokers or regular exposure to second-hand smokers
  • Quitters who have quit smoking for less than 15 years
  • Chronic smoker

In addition, a U.S. study recommends at least one low-dose chest CT scan per year for the below people who are at high risk for lung cancer:

  • Has a Smoking Index^(pack year) above 20
  • 50 to 80 year olds
  • Have a smoking habit or quitters who have quit smoking for less than 15 years

^Smoking index = Number of cigarettes smoked per day (packs) x Years of smoking
